Short answer

To use a sand candle, pour the wax pearls into a stable heat-safe vessel, insert a wick with about 1/4 inch exposed, and leave enough clearance between the flame and the vessel wall. Light the wick, supervise the candle, and after it cools, remove the solidified wax pool, smooth the pearls, and add a fresh wick.

Four-step setup

How to set up your pearled sand candle

Safety depends on the vessel, wick clearance, and supervision. Get those three things right before lighting it.

  1. 01

    Choose the vessel

Use thick glass, ceramic, or metal on a stable, heat-safe surface.

  2. 02

    Pour the pearls

Fill the vessel deeply enough for the wick to sit upright and secure.

  3. 03

    Place the wick

Insert the wick with about 1/4 inch exposed and leave at least 2 inches to the vessel wall.

  4. 04

    Light and supervise

Light on a clear surface. Never move the vessel while the wax is hot.

The format advantage

Reset the surface, not the whole candle.

After the flame is out and the wax is completely cool, lift away the small solidified wax piece around the wick. Then smooth the remaining pearls and insert a fresh wick.

After the burnWait until the wax and vessel are completely cool.
To resetRemove the solidified piece, smooth the pearls, and add a new wick.
To refillAdd more pearls of the same type before placing the next wick.

Before every burn

The wax is flexible. Fire safety is not.

  • Use only a stable, nonflammable, heat-safe vessel.
  • Keep at least 2 inches between each wick and the vessel wall.
  • Never add oil to a lit candle or hot wax.
  • Keep the candle away from children, pets, drafts, and flammable objects.
  • Never leave a flame unattended.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Fix the setup before relighting

Why does the wick go out quickly?

The wick may be buried too deeply or crowded by loose pearls. Leave about 1/4 inch exposed and make sure the wick stands straight before lighting it.

Why is the vessel getting too hot?

The wick may be too close to the wall or there may be too many wicks. Extinguish the candle, let it cool, and reset each wick with at least 2 inches of clearance.

What containers can I use for a sand candle?

Use stable thick glass, ceramic, or metal vessels designed to handle heat. Avoid plastic, thin glass, unprotected wood, and damaged containers.

Can I add my own fragrance?

Place a portion of cool, unlit pearls in a closed container, add a small amount of compatible fragrance oil, then seal and shake to distribute it. Test one burn before adding more. Never add oil to hot wax, a lit candle, or directly onto the wick.

How do I reuse the sand wax?

Wait until everything is cool, remove the small solidified wax piece and used wick, smooth the remaining pearls, and place a fresh wick.

Start unscented and decide how much fragrance each burn needs.
